Built in the 3rd century BC by the Greeks and later expanded by the Romans, today the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, with its 109 m diameter cavea, is, after the one in Syracuse, the largest theatre not only in Sicily, but also in the Italian peninsula and Africa.
However, it is undoubtedly the most spectacular, thanks to its stunning panoramic view over the Gulf of Schisò, with the majestic silhouette of Mount Etna in the background.
Originally used for dramatic performances and later transformed into an arena for gladiators, the theater is now a vibrant venue for a wide range of performances, from theater and opera to concerts and prestigious award ceremonies such as the David di Donatello.
With a seating capacity of 4,500 – expanding to around 10,000 when including the parterre – it attracts large and enthusiastic audiences. Its unique setting makes it one of the most admired venues by Italian and international artists alike. Moreover, since several years the Teatro Antico di Taormina hosts the annual Graduation Ceremony for UniMe students.
